Strabo was a renowned geographer who visited Egypt himself during the reign of Augustus and found that delta at flood time was a striking sight, stating : ' the whole country is under water and becomes a lake, except the settlements and those are situated on natural hills or on artificial mounds and contain cities of considerable size and villages which, even when viewed from afar, resemble islands.
