Al-Deir

Description
A fortress was built during Roman times to safeguard the caravan route at Darb al-Arba'in (Forty-day Track) 30 km. north of Kharga and near Qasr. The name means 'monastery', and was used as such during the Christian era. Later, both Turkish and British troops occupied the fortress.. The fortress has twelve round towers with a walk way between them, and thus far, there has been little excavation of the site.
