Statue of the Goddess Taweret
CG 39194 Cairo Antiquity Museum
Material: Green Schist
Size: Height: 96 cm
Location: Karnak, Northern area of the Temple
Excavation: A. Mariette's Excavations of 1860
Period: 26th Dynasty (664-525 BC)
This is a very unusual statue of the hippopotamus goddess Taweret. Note that the lower limbs and the claws instead of hooves are those of a lion. The figure is standing with its upper limbs resting on two hieroglyphs for protection. The cylinder on the top of the head would have once held the crown of Hathor, with cow horns. alt="Statue of the Goddess Taweret"
