Title:

Model of a Servant Girl

Description:

The Chief Steward and Chancellor Meketre was buried at Thebes. In his tomb were placed a large number of wooden models representing servants and workers on his estate, engaged in the tasks which they had performed for him in life. This is one of the finest. The girl wears wristlets and anklets and a large collar-like necklace; her tight fitting dress is gaily patterned. With one hand she steadies on her head a rectangular basket containing wine jars with conical stoppers, probably of mud; in the other she carries a live duckling for her master's table. The figure is four feet tall and is housed at the Cairo Museum. (Middle Kingdom, about 2000 B.C.)
