Naga el-Deir, The Red Monastery in Egypt

Naga el-Deir

Along a cliff just outside Girga the Naga el-Deir Necropolis rambles along for several miles. The dead here were from a wide spread of time beginning in the Pre Dynastic era and continuing up to the Middle Kingdom. Of notable interest is the Reisner papyris that was found here on a sarcophagus from the 12th Dynasty. It told of the organization of a building site and provided names and relationships of at least seven hundred workers and overseers.
