Objects from King Tut's Tomb Returned

August 16, 2011 - Several artifacts will return to Egypt after having spent several years at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The museum and the Supreme Council of Antiquities signed a memorandum of understanding in November 2010 for the return of the 19 objects.

The objects, most classified as bits or samples, have been identified as originating from the tomb of King Tutankhamun. At the time the tomb was discovered, the Egyptian authorities allowed excavators to keep a significant number of the treasures found. Therefore, many of these items were part of Howard Carter's personal collection and then turned over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art at his death.
