Herodotus was a historian who, with regards to the Egyptian agricultural production, is quoted as saying: 'they merely wait for the river of its own accord to flood their fields; then when the water has receded, each farmer sows his plot, turns the pigs into it to tread in the seed and then waits for the harvest.' He also provides the best-known, but not the only, testimony as to the Greek interest in and veneration of the wisdom and antiquities of Egypt. See his complete work on Egypt:
