Queen Candace was a formidable woman who had mounted an attack on Thebaid. She submitted to the prefect Petronius, and he left a Roman Garrison at Primis. However the potential revenue from the area did not justify the expense of maintaining a permanent military presence and within a year or two the limits of Roman occupation had been set at Hiera Sykaminos, which was some eighty kilometers to the south of the First Cataract.
