The prefect Petronius led two expeditions into the Meroitic kingdom, during which he captured several towns, received the submission of the formidable one-eyed Queen Candace and left a Roman Garrison at Qasr Ibrim (Primis). The garrisoning did not last long though. The potential for profit from the area did not justify keeping a military presence and within two years time the Roman occupation was limited to Hiera Sykaminos, some eighty kilometers to the south of the First Cataract.
